Roundworms in Dogs, Cats and Guinea Pigs Roundworm infestation in dogs and cats often occurs early in life and is especially problematic during this period of growth as roundworms compete for nutrients in your pet's food. Roundworm in Dogs and Puppies: There are two main species of roundworms that affect dogs; these are Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonine. Toxocara canis causes more serious disease and can be also transmitted from pets to people. Roundworm in Cats and Kittens: There are two common species of roundworms that can infest cats, Toxascaris leonina and Toxocara cati. Similar to the canine variation above, Toxocara cati is zoonotic and therefore, problematic to people's health. Roundworm in Guinea Pigs: While roundworm is rarer in guinea pigs, they can become secondary hosts to roundworms. If you notice any of the following symptoms, you should speak with your veterinarian to determine if your guinea pig needs worming:

  • Bloated or enlarged abdomen
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Lethargy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Rough and unkempt coat
  • Unusual droppings (softer than normal)
